What Service Mode provides

Service Mode is Tesla’s built-in environment for diagnostic and service tasks. Screens vary with model and software. Treat it as a source of evidence rather than a universal repair button. This lesson covers observation and recording; service procedures require understanding their prerequisites. Start with the owner’s complaint in one sentence, such as “charging stops after a few minutes”. Record the model, software, timing and conditions to give the diagnostic screen context.

What to record before making changes

1. The complete warning and fault identifier, without cutting off relevant screen content. 2. Timing and repeatability: continuous, after startup or during a particular action. 3. Which systems respond and which do not. 4. Recent repairs, updates, discharge events and component replacements. Do not begin by clearing the list. Its history may link several messages to one event. Remove VINs, profile names and personal information from public reports; send necessary details directly to the specialist.

Practical exercise

Write a short report: complaint → conditions → messages → previous actions → question for the specialist. Label observations separately from assumptions. “The module does not respond” is more precise than “the module has failed” before the cause is checked. Use the evidence to select the next step. If it requires intervention in a high-voltage or safety system, stop at gathering information and involve a suitably trained specialist.
